How firm should your mattress be?How firm should your mattress be?How firm should your mattress be?

When it comes to finding a mattress that feels just right, there's a lot to consider. Are you large or small? Do you always sleep on your back or do you switch from your tummy to your side? Do you usually sleep alone or with a partner? It's important to think about your answers and then visit a mattress showroom like the CJ Mulholland Mattress Factory in Hamilton where you can try out a wide range of mattresses before you buy. Experts agree you should always lie on a mattress for at least 15 minutes before deciding whether it's comfortable or not because some mattresses take that long to conform and adjust to the shape and warmth of your body. It's also a good idea to olympic bring along the pillow you sleep with to make sure you'll still find it comfortable once it's in your home. Firm or extra firm mattresses are good for back sleepers or tummy sleepers because they provide the best support for the spine. Sleeping on a softer mattress can cause the spine...

Sleeping beauties: are these the world's best beds?

Image
I t wasn't such a long time ago that sleep was considered an activity for wimps. Life's too short, they said in the power-crazed Eighties. "Sleep when you're dead!" Today that just seems ignorant. For our brains, beauty and overall brilliance, there is no substitute for a good night's sleep, and approximately one third of a life well lived should be spent tucked up in bed. But just as everybody has wildly cake different dreams, we all have different hopes for our beds. Like houses, you get what you pay for. The Sleep Council recommends that you spend as much as you can afford. So what – when money is no object – does that mean you're going to get? A visit to some of the best bed makers in Britain is an education in the science of sleep. It goes without saying that posture, ie your comfort, and temperature are essentials in guaranteeing a good night's sleep, and the quality of a bed will ultimately come down to the materials used to make it. The king...

a day in the life of a creative renaissance woman

(Oprah.com) -- At the small worktable in Anna Rabinowicz's sunny Manhattan office, smooth slices of agate -- some as small as coins, others as big as dinner plates, in swirling shades of sapphire, rust, and olive -- mingle with wrist-thick hunks of faceted crystal, three knobby yellow gourds, and a dried version of Anna's latest muse."A neat thing about sea fans," says Anna, 39, who is wearing silver sea-fan-shaped earrings, "is how they move." She imitates the meshlike creature's undulations with her hand. "They're at the whim of the current; they get their nutrients from whatever happens to pass through." She lifts the stainless steel colander/fruit bowl she recently designed based on her sea fan research, its sides veined with silver tendrils. If a sea fan mated with a Rolex, this would be the result. I'm spending today dipping a toe into the ocean of Anna's creative output -- and the colander is just one of the creatures in a ...

Extra Large Dog Beds - Kuranda vs Coolaroo

googletag.display("div-ad-articleLeader");Cot Dog BedsWashable, Indestructible, and HygienicEstimated reading time: 4 minutes See bottom for summary I have a 130lb Mastiff who, because of her size and her tendency to view everything as a chew toy, had made it nearly impossible to find a suitable dog bed.  As a large dog owner I have found (a) most  "pillow" style large dog beds were prohibitively expensive (b) not very durable (c) unhygienic and difficult to clean.   PricingI was looking for anything in the ball park of  54 inches long by 31 inches wide. That was about the space she took up when laying on her side. Depending on the material a bed that size could run upwards of $100.00 for memory foam (overstock.com) or you could find a large micro suede bed at Wal-Mart for about $80. 00 The problem was that whether I spent $80 merchandise or $100 I was still going to run into the next problem which was durability.    DurabilityI had opted for choice number 3, DIY....

The End Of Human Checkout Lines?

Image
I just read that Amazon is testing cashier-less technology in larger stores after it opened its first cashier-less store, Amazon Go, inSeattle at the beginning of the year. With minor glitches to the system in its trial phase last year, Amazon Go has gone ahead as planned and it is catching on wildly. What's not to like about going into a store, picking up everything you need, and leaving without having to stand in line at a checkout counter? Well, for some of us, we actually like that human interaction at the cash register. Even now I miss one of the cashiers I would see at the Waitrose in my old London neighborhood. This one cashier and I would exchange ideas on the stop news of the day, we would talk about Gujarat, or just remark about how badly Brexit was going. I hate lines, but I love that human interaction involved in the market exchange. It might be the only saving grace about such exchanges, but it makes human connections possible in the context of the market sp...

king size wood flooring platform bed and headboard with built-in lights and outlets and hidden drawers for $400!

Image
Wow, that's a really long title!A few years ago, I designed and built this headboard for my wife (fiance at the time) when we lived apart. It plugs in to any 1 standard wall outlet, and includes 2 light switches for the overhead lights (3-way switches so either side would control them), and 4 regular outlets (2 on each side at the base) in order to accommodate anything we'd ever need to plug in on our side. I built it with the intent that no matter where we moved, no matter what room it went in, there would be outlets and lights for us - no more fighting over the 1 plug 10 feet away for our clocks and cell phone chargers! The original was made to fit a queen bed on one of those cheap metal frames with a box spring nestled in it. Fast forward - 2 big dogs, and 1 kid later (with another on the way), we've decided it's time to get a KING SIZE BED. I can't really reuse this headboard anymore, so I've decided to start from scratch and build another! This time around...
